Thursday, July 27, 2006 Replies to the discussion forums: Overall, the people in both the forums are very friendly and willing to share their experiences in theatre dance. Some of which give links to their website to share their pictures of the dances they had. Even though some were not able to help me with the question posted, however, they were courteous enough to apologise and ask more. Another person from a different forum who helped me out with my question, replied that to cheoreograph a dance,it's more on how we feel towards the music, etc. This shows that dance moves usually comes from within us and how we feel and groove towards the music played. Dancing, it's all about the feel..~ ----- hamba blogged at 2:17 PM

For example, by the use of the boolean operators and also keywords in the research finding, it has helped me to find information which is more relevant to my search. On the other hand, it also helps me to be able to learn more about the topic of my interest which is dance. Besides that, i have also been able to find out more about the characteristics of each search engine. Overall, i have learnt different kinds of skills in which it would help me for my future search findings, and not only that, keep me updated on the internet as a research tool. -------- hamba blogged at 3:48 PM
Thursday, July 13, 2006 ..:continuation of assignment 7:.. 3) Title of internet resource: access arts URL : www.accessplace.com/arts.htm Purpose The aims of the website are not clearly stated. As this is a directory, the main aim of the website is not clearly stated. However, as users we know that the main aim of the subject directory is to make sure that the information that have been placed in the directory is of reference to the topic that we researched on. Thus, we could see that there is a difference in the purpose of each of the website in prior to the main focus of the information/content. Coverage The site covers a large range of topics and subjects. From the dance architecture to dance theatre. It comprises of wide range of articles and media reviews, etc. For example, if I were to enter a website in the theatre section- theatre journal, it would redirect me to the main webpage. To further improve the site, they may want to add dance videos too and also make a distinct colour font for each different category. As this is a subject directory, therefore, it has its own business directory where it helps users to find the specific information wanted. This would make it easier for the users. Since it is a subject directory, there are many links to the different dance category. Most of them are very useful and has relation with the dance search that the user is looking for. Authority This is an authoritative source as it has different web pages inserted in the whole subject directory. If the source is not authoritative, thus, the website link posted in the site would not be available. The website also have it 's own privacy and copyright notice. This shows that the webpage is authoritative with email address written for users to give suggestions, etc. On the other hand,I am sure that the accessplace.com/arts is being linked by few web pages as a source for research findings, etc. Accuracy I feel that accessplace.com is being neutral and is not bias in any way. It only states on the purpose of the website and does not add on any views or biasness in commenting the webpage (URL). This is a factual site where there are different kinds of web pages which users are able to enter without any difficulty. It is also free from grammatical, spelling and typographical errors as it only states and describe briefly on each certain webpage. Currency The information posted, are only updated if the different kinds of website’s URL is being changed too. This is because if the URL is not changed, the description about the website will be the same. Since it is a subject directory, the contents have to be focused to the subject too. It is maintained well as the websites are all in relation to the subject matter. Accessibility The site is accessible as we do not require any registration or payment log-ins. The site is free for all and no restrictions are being made. The information are also accessible as the main aim for a subject directory is to provide useful websites and information to users. Thus, it would be free for all. Presentation and Arrangement The information is well presented and arranged in an organized manner. The information however is brief and not detail as the main purpose is for users to have a rough idea about the certain webpage. There is also a section- accesshelp where it helps users to use the search facilities in a proper way. It also has the tips on how to continue with successful search using the directory. Thus, the search features are useful to users to find information efficiently. As users may be a little bored with the format of the whole webpage, they may want to enhance it with pictures and also different colours to the webpage. Monday, July 10, 2006 **Assignment 7** 1) Title of internet resource: Dance school URL: www.susanchambersdance.com Purpose The aim of the website is to give knowledge to users about the performance art in the private theatre school. It not only aims to give knowledge to the users. However it aims to also attract more people to join the theatre dance. Coverage This site is an organizational webpage where it aims to promote the Susan chambers dance school. It is a focused website as it only handles information that has got to do with the school itself. The contents are related to the whole coverage of the site. They may want to add flash or animation in order to enhance the whole website. As this is a theatre dance webpage, a gallery page could be published in order to also show the past events that the school has joined and organised. There are also links to other webpages. It is also being classified into two catagories. One is for the dancer and the other is meant for dance itself. It is meant for users to have a good knowledge about dance institutions, etc. Authority Basically this is an authoritative source as it is a business organization one. In this case, the information published on the webpage would have to be precise and accurate as they are showing it to many users from all over the world. On the other hand, the webpage also writes about their own dance tutors. Since the school is quite established as it has been in the industry since the 1980s, I believe that the sources here are accurate and real. It is an authoritative site. Accuracy This site is a site meant for organizational purposes. The information in the webpage is based on facts however; they have their own promotional strategy to sell their company. Thus, they emphasized a lot on the company’s strengths and not the weaknesses. With this, there are some content that is based on facts and some on opinions. Currency The information in the webpage is not really up-to-date as the past events are still located in the website. They have not updated for the upcoming events. However, most of their information are not changed due to the fact that it is mostly based about the organisation itself. In a business/organisation based website, the information should not always change frequently. This is to make sure that the organisation is in a stable state. On the overall, the webpage is well maintained. However, they should update the recent events or future upcoming ones. Accessibility The site is accessible and it does not require any registration and log-ins. However, registration is needed only if the user would like to join the organization for dance classes, etc. The information on the webpage is accessible for free and no payment is needed for users to read them. Presentation and Arrangement The information is well presented and arranged. However, I feel that more improvement could be made in designing the whole webpage. The colour combination and the navigation buttons could be improved. The website does not have features such as site map or any index section. Improvements should be made by having a section for users to give feedback and also an index section to make research easier for them. However, as their webpage is based on information and facts, thus their main emphasis is to inform the users about their organization only. Usability It is easy to use as the webpage used simple navigation for users. There are no user support facilities. This webpage is not user friendly and thus, I feel that they should add in more features to enhance the whole webpage by adding in: Overall On the overall, i feel that the website is well-organised. However it is not user friendly as there are no facilities for the users if they have any doubts or disputes about the website or to the dance school itself. Even though the visuals are clear and focused, however, the company is lacking its tecnhical web navigations. They should also enhance their whole webpage with different kinds of media(video, etc) ------------------ 2) Title of internet resources: Contemporary Arts Media The website offers over 2500 titles of videos, DVDs, books across all art forms: from performing to performance, from music to electronic media, from physical to spiritual, from visual and beyond. The main aim of the website is to develop and maintain a global hub for the curious artist, for the art student and for their master teacher and - in general - to promote art and culture in education Coverage The site covers on dance and the different medias where users are able to have a look at the different dance performances and also know more about dance. Most of materials are supposed to be purchased before they are actually able to be read or watched. However, they have different catalogs where users are able to look at. The catalogs are being divided into many categories. For example, dance, fashion, etc. Comparing with the previous webpage, it differs mainly due to the emphasis of the webpage. To further enhance this webpage, it would be better if live video are being telecast and also shown for referencing for users. This would make the users interested and motivate them to learn more about the modern theatre dance. There are links to the website. However, I feel that the links are not that useful as it does not focus on theatre dance itself or other types of dances, but those are websites to promote the different contemporary arts. Authority This is an authoritative source as most of the books or media that are being published, would have to be bought or rather purchased first in order to read or view it. I feel that the source is mostly based on facts and not on any bias view. However, there are no reviews about this site.
The facts are accurate as the main purpose is to publish the different kinds of media for dance purposes online. The views on the certain products for the different types of dance media may be a little bias to an extent as the main aim is to attract users to buy the products and also be amazed by the contents of the videos or books, etc. Thus, this website does contain facts, which are the prices and the sale of the books and media. However, the feedback and views about the media, maybe a little bias as to attract users to purchased. However, on the overall, it has a neutral standing. The website is free from spelling and typographical errors. As the main purpose is to attract customers, therefore, they would limit the errors of the contents in the webpage. Currency Accessibility The site is easily accessible as the users are able to view the different types of media online, whenever they wished to look at. However, the disadvantage of this site is that, if users would want to look out for more information on the certain media (dance), they would have to purchased it before being able to know more about the certain product. Thus, in a way, the information accessible is not 100% free as they would also charge users who do referencing for the book, etc. Therefore, this webpage is only accessible to a certain extent. Presentation and Arrangement The information is well presented and arranged. The words are usually inserted at the bottom of the picture of the media, as a caption or rather a summary about the certain product (media). At the bottom of the whole summary, the prices are than inserted. With this, it is a way of them actually capturing the interest of the users. Once the users are interested in the certain product media, they would not be too hesitant to buy and purchased it. The website also has features such as the search facility. For the search facility, it is jus a simple one where the users would type in the required information needed. However, it would be better if the company have a more detailed search facility. Like for example, stating the required date (needed) and also the title of the media that the user would like to find our or purchased, etc. On the overall, the search features is just a simple one where users will just have to type in the required search findings. Usability The site is easy to use and navigate around. However, if only they could enhance the whole website into a more interactive one where users would also be able to ask questions about the certain product and also find out more on the same kinds of products that the company has published in the website. This would thus make research finding or rather, easier for the users to find about the certain information needed. It will save time and thus, more users would enjoy logging onto this site. Overall On the overall, the website is fairly alright. The format and style of the whole webpage is simple and organised. However, i would enjoy going to this site, if more interactive programs that could be put up inside this webpage. This would thus enhance the whole design of the webpage. It will look more professional, fun and exciting! ------------ hamba blogged at 5:22 PM
Thursday, June 29, 2006 **Assignment 6** 1) Title of internet resources: Theatre dance URL : http://www.srimahligai.com/ Purpose The aim of the website is not only meant for entertainment, however, it is also to attract readers who are interested in theatre dance to join in the events and activities that they held. The website also aims to reach out to readers and make them understand more about the Malay theatre dance in Singapore. Overall, the purpose would be on information, business and entertainment. Coverage The site is basically not only about the theatre dance. However, it is also about the music played in the theatre and the current music genre in the modern Malay world. On the overall, it covers diversely on the Music genre and also a little about the theatre dance. It does not have a focus on the certain subject discussed. They did not add in about their company 's background and also the main aim of having the organisation- Srimahligai group. Personally, I feel that by adding in that information, it 'll be better for the readers to have basic information about their company. On the other hand, there are also tags and videos meant for users to take a look at the different variety of theatre dance that is being performed by the organisation. The other links to other websites are very useful as it is relevant to which Malay dance theatre is all about. The links also gives us a clearer understanding on the groups that are participating actively in the different theatre dance planning, etc. Authority The sources that have been posted up in this website, are those articles written by professionals of the area. As they have a very good background and experiences based on the subject interest, they would be able to write articles with facts and they have the rights to make judgements on the dance theatre scene. The videos are also based on actual events. Thus, the sources are reliable and there are trusted. Accuracy The facts in this website are accurate as it is based on actual events that actually happened. On the other hand, the articles and discussions were all written by people who are experts in this area. For example, Munif A Bahasuan, he is the board of members for MACP- Music Authors Copyright Protection. He wrote an article about the Malay Music Culture and Its Evolution. This site, is a factual website where it discuss about the current issues of the Malay Dance theatre and the elements of it. It is free from grammatical, spelling and typographical errors. Currency The information in this website is up-to-date. It has their upcoming events being posted up on the website. On the other hand, there are current videos which are also beiing updated. However, they should edit the videos on their web as there's only one video being shown and it was only posted in January. Accessibility The site is accessible and the information are freely to used. However, the videos posted are copyright and readers are not able to insert it in any websites unless being entitled to. On the overall, the information that has been posted are freely to be read by anyone. Presentation & Arrangement On the whole, the site 's presentation and arrangement is well organised and makes it user-friendly for the readers (users). This would not make much of a trouble for the users to read the information that have been publicised on the web. There is a tagboard where it allows the users to tag and instantly message the company for any other further details about the certain dance, music, etc. It also has a comment page where users would be able to express their interest and concerns on certain issues. However, the disadvantage of this site is that, it doesn 't have a search facility for users to find on the issues or events that Srimahligai's participating in and also for information that the user wants to get to know more. Usability It is easy to navigate around as the navigation buttons do show clearly about the specified path. However, to enhance the site, they may want to add in other features that would make it easier for users to navigate around. They might include different navigation buttons for each navigated path. Overall On the overall, i feel that the website is normal and nothing impressive. However, what makes me enjoy going to this site is that, there are videos where i am able to look at and enjoy thee music being played in the windows media player. The videos played are very exciting and it won 't take such a long time for the loading. On the other hand, i am really interested in knowing more about the development and ways of theatre dance. It's a website which i always frequent. -------- 2) Title of internet resources: Pictures URL: www.corbis.com Reflections: Purpose The aim of the website is clearly stated in the webpage. It states it- (to entertain, to inform and to sell products. ) This shows that their main objectives of having this webpage is to entertain readers, to also inform them about how we could look things in a different perspective and also to sell the pictures online. They not only have visuals for the readers, but also to provide services to make it as a not just images and footage, but they also provides services that make it easier to source, locate, and license. Coverage The site is actually a place where internet users would turn to for any visuals and quality pictures. Besides that, this webpage is a place where the users would find/search for the visuals wanted. The main aim is for the webpage to actually provide pictures and nothing more. Thus, the materials that are covered would be basically visuals. A short caption about the certain picture could be inserted underneath the picture as well. This would enable users to have a better understanding about the picture and what it is all about. The search enables us to only do findings on the picture that we have to look for. However, there are no links to other sites. I think at least they should have inserted some links to the other organization so that it enables the user to have a more variety of visuals that could be used. Authority The organisation is well organised as it has a hierarchy of the executive management. This shows their professionalism of handling and organising the pictures. This would also mean that it is an entrusted source. As it is a visual- based webpage, there are no facts. However, there are pictures related to the search findings. The site also protects the author’s work and it enables the users to know the person who took the picture, etc. The site is based on perspective and thus, there is no grammatical errors or typo-error. Currency The information here does not have to be up-to-date. However, this website would always have new sets of pictures and visuals to be published. It shows how efficient and well-maintained their organization is. The pictures are all organized in a proper manner. Accessibility The site is easily accessible as it does not require and registration nor log-ins. It is a free and easy website where users would come in to look through the pictures for a purpose. However, the company protects the pictures that are posted. They encompass the copyright laws for the users who wish to use the pictures, etc. Presentation and Arrangement The information is well presented and arranged. The pictures are arranged in order of their popularity and validity to the search wanted. There are other features such as site map and index to enable easy search for the users. This search features are effective in helping users to find direct information without having to keep searching the main information wanted. It saves time and effort in doing the whole process of research. Usability Overall hamba blogged at 2:59 PM
Tuesday, May 30, 2006 .:ASSIGNMENT 5:. SEARCH ENGINE 1) Search engine: Google Key words: "theatre dance" school Url: http://www.susanchambersdance.com Purpose: Information, Marketing Size of hits: 560 000 Any relevant ranking: 60% of the 20 webpages are relvant to my findings. This webpage is ranked second in the google search engine. Relevant results: Google only returns pages that include all of my search terms. There is no need to include "and" between terms. Google ignores common words and characters such as "where" and "how", as well as certain single digits and single letters, because they tend to slow down the search without improving the results. In Google, the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button will take readers straight to the most relevant website that Google found for the query. Comparing this search with yahoo search engine, I prefer using google as it is faster. Google search was 0.05 seconds compared to yahoo, which was 0.18 seconds. On the other hand, the first 10 webpages in google are of more relevant than those in yahoo search engine. 2) Search engine: Yahoo Key words: Contemporary arts media Url: http://www.hushvideos.com/v2/education Purpose: Entertainment Size of hits: 12,000,000 Any relevant ranking: There is only 20% of the 20 websites which are relevant to my research. This webpage was first ranked in yahoo search. Relevant results : In Yahoo search engine, I have to use specific words to describe exactly what I am looking for. More general terms will give a larger number of results. By default, Yahoo! Search returns only pages that include all of our search terms. To include Words, we would have to type a plus sign + in front of each one. To exclude Words, we have to type a minus sign - in front of them. To find two or more alternatives, use OR and to search for an exact phrase, we have to put quotation marks around two or more words. I felt that for yahoo search, they have repetition and thus, this shows that they do not eliminate their searching strategies META SEARCH ENGINE 3) Search engine: Dogpile Key words: latest news on theatre dance (Singapore) Url: http://www.nchoreographers.org/news.htm Purpose: News Size of hits: 77 Any relevant ranking: 60% of the first 20 webpages are relevant on the latest news about theatre dance. However, only 2 of the websites are relevant to Singapore's context. This webpage was first ranked in the dogpile search engine. Relevant results: In Dogpile.com, the virtual retriever, Arfie chases down the best results from the Internet's top search engines, including Google, Yahoo! Search, MSN, Ask.com, About, MIVA, LookSmart and more. Once the results are retrieved, the innovative metasearch technology used by Dogpile goes to work removing duplicates and analyzing the results to help ensure the best results top the list. In Dogpile.com, there are more categories to choose from; web, images, audio, video, yellow pages or white pages. Moreover, the "Comparison View" feature allows comparing results from the leading engines. 4) Search engine: Vivisimo Key words: "dance+theatre"advocacy Url: http://www.grarodance.com/297870.html Purpose: Advocacy Size of hits: 74700 Any relevant ranking: The first 40% of the 20 websites are relevant. This website was in the fifth rank under Vivisimo.com search. Relevant results: In Vivisimo.com, it is different compared to dogpile as it features categories from informational websites like Yahoo! News, CNN, FirstGov, NY Times etc. In vivisimo.com, it does not provide users special/extra features compared to dogpile.com. Vivisimo.com seems to be for business searches. There is also no save settings for the users preferences in Vivisimo.com. SUBJECT DIRECTORY 5) Search engine: Lycos (Subject directory) Key words: directory +(newsletter on dance theater)+ Url: http://www.accessplace.com/arts.htm >cyber dance >news & information >Singapore arts festival This is a Web Exhibit Catalogue Directory of science and arts online exhibits. Purpose: Information, News Size of hits: 292 200 Any relevant ranking: 20% of the first 20 websites are related. The webpage which I found quite relevant to my topic was ranked seventh in the Lycos search. Relevant results: Lycos topical searches aggregate information into highly segmented indexes, helping users refine the searches and quickly access the most pertinent and useful information. After using Lycos as a base to search the subject directory, there were many options to choose from. However, I favoured the acceessplace.com/arts as it focused into the subject-related site that I needed. Comparison and Evaluation on search effectiveness 1) Compare the search results. Identify 2 characteristics that make all 3 search facilities similar or different from one another. Similarities: For phrase searching, all the search engines (google, yahoo, lycos) uses the open inverted comas " " and also for the term definitions on including or excluding words, all of them uses + which allows to retrieve words (common) and - to exclude the terms/words. Differences: For directories, the user can control the search pattern through the descriptors. It allows the user to browse and it is more vague and general in their search terms. Search engines leave the searching pattern to the computer program and can be used to find more specific terms/resources. For the Meta search engines, it is used by collating all the other search engines in one. The problem with this is, the search results are more comprehensive but it is slower to obtain. 2) Do you find any strength/weakness of each of them, in terms of search capability? On the whole, in directories, it is good for general information but not successful in locating specific results. The number of resources in the directory is far much lesser than those in the search engine and also Meta search engine. Search engines are more user friendly and easy usage unlike the others. Overall, I favour google.com as it gives relevant and precise search findings unlike the rest. For Meta search engines, it gives a very wide range of search. In a way, it is an advantage to us; however, the content of the search does not really meet to my needs. 3) Overall, which search facility best meet your searching needs? Why? I prefer Google.com as it is effective and most of the search meet to my needs. The relevant choices are always at the first page and thus, it makes the whole search process a very fast and efficient one. From what I have researched on, Google search is based on the page popularity that is measured in links from other pages (high rank if a lot of other pages are linked). 4) Comment whether your research topic has any co-relation to the purposes of the resources retrieved. My research topic has co-relation to the purposes of the resources retrieved. My topic is on Development of theatre dance. However, I learnt that we cannot use the same key words for a more precise search. We have to be more detail in our choice of words. From the WebPages that I have researched on, for example, on the dance school- Susan chambers school of theatre dance, it is an information tool for readers to read about the different choreographers and also the purpose of marketing out the school to the public. hamba blogged at 11:07 PM

*ASSIGNMENT 4* 1) Type of website: Organisation Reasons: 'The place' is a business and informative website whereby it not only aims to promote its classes and school. However, it keeps the reader updated on events that is happening throughout the year. On the other hand, it also informed people about the theatre events that will be shown. A brief description is written in the webpage to inform the readers more about the play, etc. I feel that this is a good website as it ensures all readers (from different age-groups) are updated with events. The tone of the website is friendly and ensures that the readers feel comfortable. It also market out their classes, videos and DVDs. Reasons: This webpage is a content-based page which contains information on dance in general. It also writes on how dance being an art form. Moreover, it also touched on social dancing and different forms of dancing. This is an information website as it contains real facts for example; how ballroom dancing was originated and it also writes on the development of theatre dance. 3) Type of website: Personal Reasons: This is a personal webpage written by Jessica Peterson. She writes about her feedback and how she felt on dance movements (theatre dance) which are collaborated with the art of landscaping. Indeed, it is a very interesting article. 4) Type of website: Organisation Reasons: This is a business website where it aims to only promote its dance classes as well as dance teachers and staff. It writes on the background of the dance teachers, etc. This enables the dancers or even the public to know more about the teachers and staff in the school. The tone of the webpage is formal. This is an example of how organisation webpages should be. hamba blogged at 7:41 PM
